Classification Rating

The Insurance Services Office (ISO) uses its Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS) to rate fire departments on a scale of 0 to 105.5. The FSRS considers several factors, including:

  • Fire department: 50% of the score is based on the quality of the local fire department, including staffing, training, and proximity of the firehouse.
  • Water supply: 40% of the score is based on the availability of water, including the number of fire hydrants and the amount of water available to fight fires. The ISO recognizes alternative water supply systems, such as dry hydrants, suction points, and hauled water.
  • Emergency communications: 10% of the score is based on the quality of the area's emergency communications systems (911).
  • Community outreach: 5.5% of the score is based on community efforts to reduce fire losses, such as fire prevention and safety courses, and fire investigation.
